Saltcoats Vics 1–1 Winton Rovers — SJFA West Region Ayrshire District League, 5 Oct 2013

Report by Keano

This game was a great advert for junior football, played in a competitive manner with both sides giving thier all, in front of a decent crowd at Campbell Park. Saltcoats were the better side in the first half, and Winton the better in the second so a draw was about a fair result.

Saltcoats started well and forced Winton on to the back foot early, with Santos and McLelland giving the defence a torid time and Wardrope was well assisted by Bonner and Gilmour at the back, the first real chance fell to Mclelland on 12mins when he got by Bonner and shot wide, and it was followed shortly after by a shot from Santos after he used his speed to outstrip the defence but his shot was well held by Wardrope in goal. both sides were playing some good football in midfield but once they got forward the defence was cutting out the danger. Stewart and Hercus were playing well in the Saltcoats defence giving Young and Walker no shot at goal. the best chance of the half came from a free kick 25yds out from the Winton goal when Davidson was brought down, Quinn took aim and guided the ball round the wall towards goal but Wardrope somehow managed to turn it round the post on 35mins. The deadlock was broken on 44mins when a wieghted pass over the defence by McLelland into the path of Santos and the Striker placed the ball under Wardope as he came charging out and clattered into him, the ref waited to see the result before taking any action, and the fact the ball rolled into the net and put Saltcoats ahead saved the big golie from being dismissed.

half time Saltcoats 1 Winton 0

The second half started with a more determined Winton side, but they were finding it hard to test Lundy in goal as Smith, Forde,Harcus and Stewart were standing firm, and when they did find a way through Lundy stood tall to make things difficult, Winton were getting some good crosses into the box but thier lack of size in the forward department most were going astray. the goal when it came was from good work by Carson on the wing beating Smith and when the cross came over it fell to an unmarked Young who rolled the ball past Lundy to square things up at 1 apiece on 70mins. withboth side trying hard for a winner it was becomeing a tense affair adn tempers did boil over a little on the wing between Davidson and Hay and the handbags were swapped but it was brought under control by ref McElhinney who booked both players.
