Saltcoats Vics 0–2 Largs Thistle — West of Scotland Cup (SJFA West Region), 18 Oct 2014

Report by Keano

Saltcoats lack of an out and out goalscorer cost them dear in this game, and although they competed well they were beaten by a better side.

Largs started the game quick and had Saltcoats hemmed back on there own box early, and after Catterson had cleared a shot from Lindsay the ball fell to Sean Lawrance and his shot was kicked of the line by Ferris to keep the score level on just 5mins, from there Saltcoats  advanced up field and were awarded a free kick 30yds out and when Monan delivered a great ball across goal there was no takers. Both sides traded possesion trying to get the upper hand, and after Davidson had set up Monan for a shot his week effort was dealt with easily by Weir and from his clearance Muir made good headway up the wing and played in a telling cross to Lawrance to flick passed Catterson at the near post 1-0 Largs. Although Largs were the better side they didn't have it all there own way and Davidson was unlucky his goal bound shot was blocked by Fisher for a corner.  HT 0-1

Saltcoats started the better in the second half and James Davidson had a good shot parred by Weir and it fell to Gilbride to clear, but Saltcoats came straight back at Largs and Davidson crossed for Rafferty to have a shot just wide, and there next attack saw Owen McNullty have a week shot at goal after going nearly the entire lenghth of the pitch. Both sides traded blows for the next 20mins or so whitout making any real headway and the shots that did come for either side were high or wide without the keepers having to work. On 75mins Davidson again tested Weir with a shot from the edge of the box but the keeper was up for the task, and that seemed to knock the stuffing out of a hard working Saltcoats side, and 5mins before the end Frizzell made the game safe for Largs when he knocked in from close range, and before the wistle the same player tested Catterson again.
