On Saturday, 16 August 2025, at the Stepford Football Centre, Saltcoats Vics travelled to Midlothian to face Easthouses Lily in a South Challenge Cup tie. Saltcoats drew first blood when striker Euan Anderson finished from close range five minutes before the break, giving the visitors a 1‑0 lead at half-time. Easthouses Lily responded with five second‑half goals to run out comfortable 5‑1 winners.
First half
-
Early chances for Lily: The home side dominated possession in the opening quarter. Neil Janczyk’s crosses and free‑kicks repeatedly created chances, but Josh Murray and Steven Thomson were denied by goalkeeper Calum Robertson or shot wide. Captain Craig Breen of Saltcoats limped off after an ankle injury in 14 minutes and was replaced by Jamie Stirling.
-
Saltcoats take the lead: Against the run of play, Saltcoats scored in the 40th minute. Cameron McIntyre’s corner was initially over‑hit, but Ross Agnew kept it alive and hooked a cross back into the box. Easthouses failed to clear, and Euan Anderson pounced to steer the ball into the bottom corner. Moments later, defender Jack Hanlon was booked for tripping Louis Swanson, and Anderson also went into the book for a late challenge. Saltcoats led 1‑0 at the interval despite being largely on the back foot.
Second half turnaround
-
Penalty miss: Three minutes after the restart, Saltcoats had a golden chance to double their advantage when Sam Neil fouled McIntyre in the penalty area. Jamie McKenna took the spot‑kick, but keeper Stephen Hay produced a superb save low to his left. That miss would prove pivotal.
-
Equaliser and quick turnaround: Within four minutes, a cleverly worked free‑kick drew Easthouses level. Janczyk shaped to cross but instead rolled the ball to Steven Thomson, who fired a first‑time shot from 18 yards past Robertson. Barely a minute later, Keiran McGachie held the ball up and laid it off to Josh Murray, whose curling right‑footed effort found the corner to make it 2‑1.
-
Easthouses pull away: With the visitors tiring, Easthouses’ power up front told. Midway through the half, McGachie shrugged off his marker and slotted home from 17 yards to extend the lead. Four minutes later, he delivered a pinpoint cross for Murray to head in his second and the home side’s fourth. Twelve minutes from time, another training‑ground routine saw Janczyk drive a low free‑kick into McGachie; he teed up Louis Swanson to lash high into the roof of the net. Easthouses had scored five unanswered second‑half goals.

The Midlothian club equalised through Steven Thomson before Josh Murray’s quick‑fire brace and Keiran McGachie’s solo effort turned the contest on its head. Louis Swanson’s late strike capped an emphatic 5–1 victory that sees Easthouses Lily progress, while Saltcoats are left to rue missed chances and a costly penalty miss.
