The teams line up at Campbell Park before Saltcoats Victoria 0–0 Vale of Leven
West of Scotland Football League Third Division · Saturday 7 November 2026 · Campbell Park, Saltcoats · Referee: Steven J. MacDonald
Saltcoats Victoria and Vale of Leven fought out a hard-earned goalless draw at Campbell Park on Saturday, in a battling contest where neither side gave an inch and the biggest chance of the afternoon came from the penalty spot.
Vale arrived in good form and set out to test Victoria's back line, pumping long throws, corners and crosses into the box at every opportunity. It was something the Vics had prepared for on the training ground during the week, and the defence stood firm, with goalkeeper Thomas Barrett commanding his area and keeping the defence organised throughout.
A Tight First Half
The midfield battle was always going to decide the afternoon, and captain Rudi Johnston and the boys in the middle more than matched their opponents. Jamie Stirling picked up an early booking on 12 minutes for stopping a promising Vale attack, but clear-cut chances were scarce at either end in a tight first half.
Penalty Drama After the Break
Victoria pushed on after the break looking for the goal that would split the sides. Vale's Greg Thackrey was booked on 50 minutes for a reckless challenge, and Brian McCullough caused problems getting in behind, putting a couple of dangerous deliveries into the box.
The big moment came when Cameron McIntyre got in at the back post and won a penalty, only for McCullough to see his spot kick missed. As the manager was quick to point out afterwards, it happens to the best of players.
Both sides turned to their benches as the game wore on. Vale made four changes, while Haydon Barrett replaced Johnston on 73 minutes and Ruaridh Thompson came on for Cameron McIntyre on 82 minutes. Kevin Strain was booked for Vale on 76 minutes after stopping another Victoria attack, but there was no breakthrough, and the points were shared.
Manager's Reaction
Manager Stevie Wilson was pleased with the point and particularly with the clean sheet:
"It was a really good game. Both teams battled away well. I've been hoping to see that side of us, that when we're up against it, can we handle it — and loads of balls in the box, they play their long throws all the time. We worked on that in training a couple of times."
"We knew the midfield battle was going to be really important today, and I thought the three boys in there all did really well."
On the penalty miss:
"Cammy gets in at the back post and wins a penalty for us, and you're thinking that's what we're looking for. Brian steps up and misses, but it's nothing on Brian — boys miss penalties. That's just things that happen."
"Vale of Leven have a decent side and they've been going well. I thought the back line was really good today, the front three worked well, and the middle part did well. I'm really pleased with the clean sheet. Tam in goals was really good today as well — loads of talking and organising. So we'll take the point and move on."
The manager also thanked the supporters who turned out on a cold afternoon, and looked ahead to next week:
"The support was great today. I just want the players to continue to show that battling. I think we've got enough quality in the team. As long as we're battling away like that, winning battles in the middle of the park, hopefully we'll have a wee bit of quality and score some goals."
