Scottish Communities Cup

Saltcoats Victoria 1–4 Glasgow University
Saltcoats Victoria’s Scottish Communities Cup campaign came to an end at Campbell Park as Glasgow University progressed to the next round with a 4–1 victory.
Conditions played a significant part in the opening 45 minutes, with a strong wind favouring the visitors after Glasgow University won the toss. The Vics knew they faced a difficult first half against a side that has already produced some impressive results this season.
Glasgow University opened the scoring around 15–20 minutes into the contest, but Saltcoats responded positively and enjoyed a good spell of their own.
Owen McGhee found himself through one-on-one with an opportunity to level, while Brian McCullough came even closer when his effort struck the crossbar.
Despite those chances, it was Glasgow University who found the net again to double their advantage.
The Vics had hoped to reach the interval at 2–0 before using the conditions to their advantage in the second half, but a third Glasgow University goal before the break left Saltcoats with a considerable task ahead.
There was also frustration during a competitive first half, with the Vics feeling there was some inconsistency in the referee’s decision-making. It was a physical contest at times, with both sets of players involved in exchanges with the official.
Saltcoats came flying out after the restart and created around five good opportunities inside the opening 10 minutes of the second half. An early goal could have changed the complexion of the game, but the Vics were unable to convert their chances.
As Saltcoats committed more players forward in search of a way back into the tie, space inevitably opened up at the other end. Glasgow University took advantage on the counter to make it 4–0.
Despite the deficit, there was no shortage of fight from Stevie Wilson’s side.
The Vics continued to battle, played some positive football and created further opportunities against a strong Glasgow University team. There were errors of judgement which proved costly, but the players continued to work until the final whistle.
Their persistence was eventually rewarded late in the game. Brian McCullough produced a cross-field ball towards the back post, where Cameron McIntyre showed bravery to get onto the end of it and head home for Saltcoats.
Manager Stevie Wilson felt the final score did not fully reflect his side’s performance, with missed opportunities ultimately proving costly.
“I genuinely didn’t feel the performance was that bad, but if you don’t take chances, you don’t win games.”
Despite exiting the competition, there were positives for the Vics to take from their performance against a Glasgow University side that has enjoyed some impressive results this season.
Wilson also highlighted the character within his squad.
“There’s a very talented group of boys here. There’s a great team spirit and we’ve got good characters in that dressing room.”
Before the match, the players and committee came together at Café del Greco’s for the club’s pre-match preparations, something the manager was also pleased to see.
With the cup competitions now behind them, attention turns fully towards the West of Scotland Football League campaign.
Next up is a local derby against Irvine Victoria at Campbell Park on Saturday, with both sides looking for an important three points.
After a difficult afternoon against Glasgow University, the focus is now firmly on responding positively in the derby.
