Six of the Best as Vics Hit Giffnock for Six

Full time at GSC Auldhouse: Giffnock 1–6 Saltcoats Victoria

Saltcoats Victoria produced one of their strongest performances of the season as Stevie Wilson’s side secured an emphatic 6–1 victory over Giffnock at GSC Auldhouse.

The Vics travelled to Glasgow in confident mood, determined to respond after dropping two points late on against Irvine Victoria the previous weekend. That frustration had been evident in training during the week, with Wilson seeing a real edge and determination from his players.

Saltcoats started brightly, pressing well and putting in a huge amount of work across the pitch. The breakthrough arrived around the 20-minute mark when Dean Wilson opened the scoring with a well-taken goal to make it 1–0.

The lead lasted barely a minute, however, as Giffnock levelled from a corner. It was an early test of Saltcoats’ character, but the response was emphatic. David Sawyers restored the lead in spectacular fashion, spotting the opportunity from around the halfway line and producing an unbelievable strike to make it 2–1.

Saltcoats carried that momentum into the second half and quickly gave themselves some breathing space. Owen McGhee struck shortly after the restart to make it 3–1 and put the visitors firmly in control.

From there, the Vics continued to push forward. Brian McCullough grabbed a double to extend the advantage, before Sawyers added his second of the afternoon to complete the scoring and seal an outstanding 6–1 victory.

The performance pleased manager Stevie Wilson at both ends of the pitch, with Saltcoats playing some excellent attacking football while remaining strong defensively. After the match, Wilson praised the response from his players following criticism of some previous performances, and felt the result had been coming.

The victory extends Saltcoats Victoria’s unbeaten run to three matches, although the manager was keen to stress that there is plenty of work still to do and that the squad cannot afford to get carried away.

Wilson also reserved a final word for the travelling Vics support, thanking those who made the journey to Glasgow to get behind the team once again.
